Sign Now! - Petition for Global Rights for the Unborn

Life Network Australia - Friday, October 09, 2009

International Call for the Rights and Dignity of the Human Person and the Family
502,879 Total Signatures as at 9 October 2009

Help C-FAM gather 1,000,000 signatures.

In the months leading up to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the foundational international human rights document, C-FAM discovered that international abortion advocate and provider, Marie Stopes International, was planning on presenting a petition to the UN community calling for Global Safe Abortion and asking states to interpret the UDHR to include abortion as a human right.

C-FAM and allied organizations recognized the need to counter the Marie Stopes International initiative and launched the UN Petition for the Unborn Child and the Family in September 2008 with the aim of presenting the UN with the signatures on December 10, 2008.

The C-FAM campaign started with the hope of garnering 50,000 signatures. By December 10, we had gathered over 400,000.  C-FAM presented the petition to ambassadors from various states and to the UN community in a press conference at UN headquarters on December 10.

Heartened by the strong response from supporters and the positive feedback from the UN ambassadors that we met with, C-FAM decided to continue the campaign with the goal of presenting 1,000,000 signatures at the next session of the General Assembly.

Send an advert to your local member - a message from the Australian Christian Lobby

Life Network Australia - Thursday, September 24, 2009

We’ve received terrific feedback from the abortion advertisement in The Weekend Australian. A number of pro-life politicians have also contacted us to say how much they appreciated it.

To make the most of this opportunity to influence politicians’ thinking on this issue, please (if you haven’t already) print this advertisement and ‘snail mail’ it to your local member of State and Federal Parliaments.

We believe a hard copy of this advertisement sent to MP’s will have maximum impact. This is especially important for Queensland and New South Wales where there is enormous pressure building to decriminalise abortion right up until birth, as tragically occurred in Victoria last year.

Some points you might like to make in a cover letter are:

That you oppose abortion
That you would like your Member to work to find ways to support women with unplanned pregnancies, rather than offering abortion as the first choice
That abortion’s frequency (100,000 per year Australia-wide) be reduced and that there be an immediate ban on late term and partial birth abortion
That every abortion takes the life of an unborn baby
Contact details for State MPs are available from these websites.

Email now to object to Marie Stopes using RU486

Life Network Australia - Thursday, August 13, 2009

This opportunity has been provided by the Australian Christian Lobby:

Australia’s drug regulator has decided to widely increase the availability of the abortion drug RU486 and also relax previous rules for its use.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) this week authorised abortion provider Marie Stopes International to use RU486 as an alternative to surgical abortion in its nine centres in Victoria, NSW, WA, the ACT and Queensland. Please click here for more details.

According to a report in Tuesday’s The Australian, Marie Stopes International also convinced the TGA to broaden the rules under which they can use the drug at their clinics, with use of the drug previously restricted to women with existing medical conditions or a risk of serious pregnancy complications.

To do this Marie Stopes had to persuade the TGA that pregnancy was “life-threatening” and they claimed that it is safer for women to terminate a pregnancy than to give birth.

ACL has publicly attacked the TGA’s decision which appears to have been based on ludicrous reasoning.

“Marie Stopes International seems to have resorted to scientifically and morally questionable arguments as a means of overcoming regulatory hurdles to get what they wanted – the ability to offer RU486 to anyone who chooses it provided they are less than nine weeks pregnant,” ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said in a media release issued on Tuesday.

“Child birth is extremely safe in Australia, with a miniscule mortality rate. To countenance an argument that women have to have access to RU486 to save them from the dangers of childbirth is absurd. At a time when there is wide public concern about Australia’s high abortion rate, is it really acceptable that the administering body should prove itself so gullible and ineffective as a gatekeeper?” Please click here to read the media release.

The TGA has made a decision with wide social, moral and ethical dimensions, without any sort of accountability to the public or democratic processes. This follows on from the Federal Parliament’s strongly contested decision in early 2006 to remove the Health Minister’s power to veto applications to use RU486.

ACL believes that we need to bring back Ministerial responsibility into decisions about the use of abortion agents like RU486, and not allow abortion clinics to dictate the agenda.

If you would like to take further action on this issue and make your concerns known about the decision to widen the use of RU486 please email the Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon at Nicola.Roxon.MP@aph.gov.au and the TGA at feedback@tga.gov.au.
