Queensland
Children by Choice, an activist group supporting abortion, has issued a Media Release calling for the decriminalisation of abortion in Queensland.
It says: “Children by Choice says Queensland has more restrictive abortion laws than many developing countries, and is calling on the new State Government to act urgently to decriminalise abortion."
The media release refers to the recent case in Cairns, where a young woman is being prosecuted for importing and using an abortion drug – they claim this means the government should decriminalise abortion to remove the ‘risk’ of prosecution.
NSW
The Greens are running a campaign to decriminalise/legalise abortion. NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon launched a campaign in early March and held a public forum on May 1, 2009 at the NSW Parliament.
They have called on the Premier, Nathan Rees to introduce legislation – they say that if the Labor government doesn’t do so, the Greens will introduce a private member’s bill to decriminalise abortion.
