Abortion in the Media

S.A billboards - outrage from two 'women's advocates'

Life Network Australia - Monday, May 02, 2011
Channel 7 News has reported that there has been a backlash against anti abortion billboards on display in the western suburbs of Adelaide. The billboards were created by an unidentified individual and sponsored by a group 'Howgoodisthat'.
Gerda Jezuchowski reported that one of the billboards was removed because it "sensationalised the consequences of a medical procedure".
South Australian Minister for the Status of Women, Gail Gago "took off her political hat" and offered her opinion, saying "I personally find the billboards to be offensive and most unhelpful to women" and that they are "arrogant and patronising to women".

Chelsea Lewis, policy officer of YWCA said "There's a whole range of circumstances why women choose to have abortions and they don't need this in their faces when they are making a decision that is their legal right".

With one in three Australian women having abortions in Australia, it is the most common female procedure. Therefore, it is important there is an ongoing conversation about abortion - why women have abortions, influences and the difficult circumstances women find themselves in. There is a lack of information about statistics, possible side effects, available support and about the procedure of abortion, that women are entitled to know. The pro abortion lobby are certainly not forthcoming with accurate information and need to be challenged. Burying our heads in the sand and not exploring these issues for women is what is "most unhelpful" to women. For this reason, Life Network Australia welcomes campaigns that put abortion 'back on the table' for discussion.

Both Ms Lewis and Ms Gago claim to advocate for women,(which they may genuinely believe they do with abortion) and run programs to fight domestic violence. American evidence shows that abortion goes hand in hand with domestic violence and that many women go through abortion feeling they have "no choice". The research also shows that for some, abortion is devastating, with long term consequences. Failure to acknowledge post abortion pain makes recovery near impossible.

Psychologist,  Dr Priscilla Coleman, has articles published in medical journals, about the impact of abortion on women and families. Dr. Coleman will be in Australia at the Real Choices Conference in Sydney in May 14 - 16. It would be advantageous for anyone working in women's health, mental health and politics to attend and get informed about abortion. Improved knowledge will inevitably result in better services and outcomes for women, families and communities.

Disturbingly, both Chelsea Lewis and Gail Gago fail to make any mention of those most affected by abortion, the unborn babies, and only refer to abortion in terms of a 'legal right' (which is incorrect as abortion is illegal in S.A) and in reference to the feelings of the mother.

Well known South Australian Pro life campaigner, Trevor Grace, offered his support to those running the billboard campaign, saying that they were entitled to express their concern about abortion.

Way to go. Well done folks for raising awareness.

It is always interesting how pro-life advocates are often denied a freedom of speech, but we'd all be hung if anti-life advocates were told to take down their billboards. The irony, it is almost laughable.

SO amazing that the abortion "lobby" are allowed to lobby, but pro-life messages are unacceptable! Typical double standards. The only thing I disagree with about the billboards is that the "casualty rate" is often higher. It is not just the mother who
hurts. Fathers, siblings, grandparents, friends....abortion causes so much pain. The pain is not caused by billboards; it is caused by the situation itself, whether it is acknowledged at the time or many years later. Women deserve to be fully informed: surely
that should be the goal of every so called "expert" or "woman's advocate". How can they say they are championing the cause of women when they want the truth hidden? And yes, add to this the number of females being aborted...but as this is somehow too confronting,
then let's just stick to giving the mother ALL the information (including an untrasound.). Let's support women by telling them the truth, all of it, and offering her the support she needs if she decides to keep her baby. Tell these advocates for women to start
there....

If you are not Pro-Life you are PRO-CHOICE not "anti-life". Ignorance is bliss.

One of the great delusions of pro aborts - which is also the marketing tool of the abortion industry is the notion of being pro "choice". How can it be "pro choice" when so many women (and often their partners) feel they have "no choice" (but to abort)-
and when women are denied information (as described in the article above) to make an "informed choice"...?! Well known pro abortion commentator Leslie Cannold even says in her book that to be "pro choice" is to be "pro abortion". As abortion ends a life (and
hurts women), the term "anti life" does not seem so unreasonable. You are right..ignorance is indeed bliss!

"How can it be pro choice.." Um, by giving women the choice? That was tough wasn't it! I also like how you had to add "(but to abort)" to make sure everyone knew which of the two options they had 'no choice' but to select. I'm glad you're finding ignorance
to be blissful but you should really bone up on logic.

Sarcasm aside, I think the point that pro aborts miss or dont care about...is that many women and couples find the pressures of finances, lack of practical/emotional support, negative stereotypes (too old, too young, with the wrong partner etc etc) act
as strong coercion for women facing unplanned pregnancies. A nurse who worked for years in recovery (post surgery) said that almost all of the women who had abortions came out of anaesthetic sobbing. "Choice" ?? Really?? Germaine Greer, renowned feminist,
said that "abortion is the last non choice in a long list of non choices". Women choose abortion "like an animal chews off its leg when caught in a trap". If it really is a "choice" then why don't pro abortion advocates fight for cutting red tape for adoption?
Because they are not "pro choice", they are "pro abortion"! "Choice" requires options...most women who have abortions do not feel they have other options. Check out unchoice.com and 'feminists for life' in the U.S. Some also argue that "It's not a choice,
it is a child!"
