The Adelaide Advertiser (Oct 17, 2011) has reported that “ANTI-ABORTION pamphlets published by MP Ann Bressington have come under fire for misleading information".
According to the article, "Ms Bressington said she was funding the printing of 120,000 anti-abortion pamphlets to be distributed by a group who had contacted her office concerned about the practice of abortion in South Australia" and that " the pamphlets contain graphic descriptions of abortion procedures and include a photograph of a dead foetus".
"Sexual Health Information Networking and Education SA (Shine SA) chief executive Kaisu Vartto said Ms Bressington's pamphlet contained inaccurate information that could traumatise children as well as women who had undergone the procedure”, but Shine SA fail to provide any information about what they believe abortion procedures entail.
Life Network Australia argues that women and the public have a right to know what abortion is - why is there no legal requirement for abortion providers to tell women? Many women are traumatised because they are not told the truth and when they do find out, it is too late.
The article reported that the Shine spokesperson said that "Terminations of pregnancies do not occur in the way that has been graphically described (in the pamphlet)", but that Ms Bressington stood by the information, which had been provided to her by concerned paediatricians.
Ms Bressington has received more than 2,000 emails of support and only nine complaints. She said that "This is about women who have been coerced into abortions who just don't believe the whole story is being told to them".
Ms Bressington added in a radio interview that this brochure does not reveal her own opinion, but that the public are entitled to information and that groups such as SHINE SA have no right to keep this information from them. She also talked about this brochure being published as a result of her constituents coming to her with their own concerns about abortion in S.A.
